The help pages on these forums say brassicas follow potatoes http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/crop-rotation/three-part-crop-rotation.php

But the RHS say potatoes follow brassicas http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=124

Or doesn't it matter ?

erm i dont think it matters - as long as you dont grow the crop in the same space for 3/4 years - however we all have good intentions in sticking to crop rotation but it doesn't usually happen - for example i have been growing beans in the same place for around 5 years and ive been growing peas in the same place for around 2 years. however i definately wont be growing onions in the same area the following year as i dont want white rot.

Thanks for easing my mind mattwragg94,
I planted my potatoes in the wrong bed  ??? or so I thought , after brassicas which meant the brassicas would go where the potatoes went and the onions would go in the same place as last year, but if it's ok for potatoes to go in after brassicas then I'll swap the onions and brassicas around  :)

hope that made sense

It's just that people often lime the soil for brassicas as it helps with clubroot. If you plant the potatoes after liming for brassicas then the potatoes may get scabby skins.

If you plant potatoes before the brassicas they won't come into contact with as much lime as the other way around. That's all ;)

Ahh. that makes sense mum  :)

What would you do in my shoes ?

2011... plot 1 brassicas, plot 2 onions, plot 3 potatoes.

2012... plot 1 potatoes, plot 2 nothing yet, plot 3 nothing yet.

Was going to plant my onion sets tomorrow in plot 2 but I could plant them in plot 3, however this would mean that the potatoes would always follow the brassicas.

Did you lime for your brassicas?

If you didn't then it doesn't matter which way round you do it  ;)
