Actually, I've got loads of bags of half rotted leaves - are they ok to use as mulch or would they just rob nitrogen/attract slugs?

I use cut up lengths of down-comer pipe - push into soil next to roots and fill up. Takes awhile to empty and the water goes to the roots.
