Judging by the way the flowers are coming out of the leaf axils, I say it some sort of ex- sprouters!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

it#s only recently started growing upwards, at first I though oh, one of my caulis has just gone straight to seed without forming a head, then I noticed all the side shoots...

Those flowering shoots may be a bit too far gone to eat, but nothing ventured  ;)  Things go a bit tough and sometimes bitter when they go to seed, but that's the worse that could happen.  I'd pick a few leaves and flowers and give them a go, but its going to be a short-lived crop as it is well on its way to a full bolt  :)

By the shape and colour of the leaves I would guess this is a cabbage. Probably something like January King that was planted too late to form a head and has now gone to seed.

excellent, cheers Salmo, January King was one of the 4 types of brassica I planted last autumn, so you could be right on the money there.

I planted January King last year and today dug up three that look just like yours!! No hearts just leaves! I I also reckon they are a cabbage or January King.

Jazz  :)
