Cucumbers stalled
« on: April 04, 2012, 19:35 »
Hi here I go with questions already, I have a problem with cucumbers. I cannot remember without a trip to the allotment which variety they are, but they are the type for growing in a greenhouse.
I started them indoors in a seed tray (in paper pots which I use for everything), they germinated fine and out grew the paper pot. I transplanted them to a slightly bigger pot, left them a few days to make sure that they looked happy, then took them to the allotment polytunnel/greenhouse where they are in a coldframe in the green house. They have been there for a few of weeks now. They look pefectly happy but they have not grown at all since they went there, they just seem to have stalled? I have searched the net and gone through pages of questions on here, has anyone any idea what I can do? Or if this question has been aasked does anyone have the link to it? Thank you

It is way too cold for cucumbers without heating.

I have only just sown mine.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi thanks for your reply, they still look happy, do you think if I bring them indoors they will start to grow again? Or should I start again? It has actually been extremely hot under the two covers but I wondered if the fluctuation between night and day might be the problem? Although obviously the temperature has dropped drastically today! I guess they might all be dead tomorrow anyway! :(

Cucumbers really don't like cold, so you might well find they don't make it. :( Being that much further north here we can only grow them inside, but we grow outdoor types indoors successfully. It still isn't too late to sow more. :)

Good job I only tried a few seeds first then! I will bring them indoors (if they are still alive tomorrow!) and start some more off!

At least yours are still alive. Mine kegged over and shuffled of to the great cucumber patch in the sky just because I moved them to a windowledge which was 2 degrees lower than the one they grew up on.

 ha I don't feel quite so bad then! I have not grown them before - much to learn! But that is all part of the fun!

Ann I feel I should warn you --- cucumbers contain a self destruct gene that they bring into play at random moments

 I shall look  forward to that then. My courgettes did the same last year. The packet said sow seed on edge - so I did. They germinated lovely, then dropped dead overnight! Found out later that I should have sown point down (vertically). I thought edge meant edge, not point  ::)

To be honest, I don't think the sowing method had anything to do with that. They recommend sowing seed on edge to help prevent rotting. If the seed had germinated, then the plant died, some other misfortune befell it!

Interesting. I wish it was easier to know what I have done wrong! I might get better at growing things then!

Same here --- they usually come up too fast to rot  :D

I sow two or three indoor cucumber seeds every 2 to3 weeks or so from early April through to mid May. Inevitably one or two plants will decide to give up and die for no apparent reason. Cold conditions are definitely not good for them. Even when sown at the same time and kept in identical conditions some plants will decide to give up and die for some unknown reason.

its too cold at the mo for them. courgettes suffer the same problem, the cold stalls their growth, soon as the heat comes, they start growing. cucumbers i grew, marketmore died outside but that was i fault. they are best grown indoors in the conservatory and kept warm until we get a good summer.
