how shady is too shady for comfrey ?

says it all really.

i have some bocking comfrey . i want to grow it at the bottom of my plot which is shaded by a low fence and trees.

too shady ?

Comfrey does grow in almost any conditions, but bearing in mind you will want to regularly harvest leaves (I assume?  :blink: ) it will need sunshine for part of the day.

Also, if it is directly underneath trees the ground  may be very dry, so you could consider adding some manure or compost to it to hold more water

mine dont get much sun at all and is going mad at the moment
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

My friend grows hers in full shade under a mass of cedar trees and the things are rampant. Every year she must get out the Roundup to try to control their spread. This is the native comfrey.

I suspect the Boking 14 will also accept whatever conditions you give it.

Ours must be the only feeble comfrey in the country Northern Hemisphere (Sorry Trillium  :D )

She gave me some small clumps from hers and to keep them under control I stuck them at the base of my 100 year old maple/acer trees. They're doing nicely but under better control due to the huge tree roots.

Sorry about your 90 lb weakling comfrey, Sunny  :D Perhaps it needs a kick in the pants with some comfrey tea.  :lol:

It's the site comfrey, not just mine and it is under some trees on the communal verge..... maybe.... just maybe.... lots of folk cut from it unseen  :ohmy: :lol:

thanks folks. it does get some sun in the evenings especially when the days get longer.

i need to remember it is early in the growing year - despite last week's warmth !
