Howard Gem Jap Engine
« on: April 02, 2012, 15:11 »
Hi, My howard won't start, was fine last summer, now it gives an occasional backfire through air cleaner when turned over.  Seems to be no resistance when cranking the engine, did a compression test on the cylinder and registered 0.
Any advice would be appreciated,

Thanks, Danny

Thanks for the advice, that certainly makes sense, and in that case hopefully not too difficult to fix,
I'll take the head off tomorrow and have a look.

Hi guys, I just got round to checking the valves and they are functioning just fine.  There is a small amount of oil on one side of the piston, the bore looks okay.  Could the decompression be stuck in the engaged position?  I have no idea how the decompression works. I can't find information on the JAP engine.  It's probably not easy to replace this engine so I'll have to do my best, any advice is much appreciated.
thanks, Danny

Decompession could be stuck open, as you say.

Hi Gwiz, I guess I'll need to strip it down and check the decompression, how does the decomp. work?  I've checked the external rod and spring are okay so it's internal.

Also, just wondering, should there be a head gasket on these or is paste good enough?
there's no gasket on this.

I've got to say that I don't know the answer to either of those questions. I'd direct you to get in touch with Meetens of Epsom who will know far more than me (hopefully!)

Do you have access to a leakdown tester?

I have a booklet here entitled J.A.P Engine Reference Book that covers the 600 S.V engine among all the other S.V units, it covers the decompresser, valve grinding etc,
If a knowledgeable person could guide me through how to post it on the manuals section as I am clueless on this computing lark I would be happy to give it a go.

The best thing to do would be to send the book to John who will scan it and then return it to you.

Thanks, would appreciate the book if it can be loaded up somehow.  I don't have access to a leakdown tester.  The decompression mechanism is down at the crankshaft behind the timing chain.  I'm gonna have a look there and if I need to remove it I'm as well reseating the valves at the same time.  Although, never done this before
