Ah yes, you 'come across' basic tools as well then?  Without definite 'pinching' it's amazing what one can accumulate over years by keeping eyes open and having a vehicle to cope. Thrown on skips, left on sites, derelict & abandoned sheds and yards, industrial auctions and the tip.  I went to a machinery auction once at a GEC site at Burnley and the huge pile of unwanted stuff tipped in the yard awaiting a skip was astonishing.  'Just take what you want from over there' said the auction staff, eager to get rid for free.  Double alumnium ladders, nowt wrong with em, went straight on the truck.  Two home-made 6 ft joiners' sash cramps, work perfectly.  A spade or two as well if I remember right and a coupla brush heads.  Just stuff not worth auctioning on the main factory floor.

Sounds interesting.  A whole thread about spade shapes and steels used to make them.  As a sidenote, I own at least 50 hammers, all of them different.  And I do have favourites.

Boats.  I suppose there's loads of types of those too.  You can never have enough tools though.  The 12 oz standard ball-pein hammer is a classic.  You'll go a long way with one of those.
