Help needed with next stage of planting out please
« on: March 28, 2012, 10:31 »
Hi guys I have all these in pots/modules, etc but am not sure what I should do next and when they can go into the lotty.

These are various toms.  Will I need to pot on again in bigger pots before they go into the ground and hanging baskets?

And these are all outside all the time now on my homemade frame thingy which has clear perspex sides.

Sugarsnap peas

Leeks on left red onions on right

Early & maincrop brussels and various brassicas

Kelvedon peas

Various lettuce, white onions & brassicas (Broad beans underneath not come thru yet!)

Blimey - so many questions in one go!

I'll try my best.

Tomatoes - look OK at the moment, but it's going to be up to 2 months before you dare put those out, keep an eye on them & pot up as needs be.

Sugar Snap Peas - can go out.

Leeks and onions - leave be.

Brussels & brassicas - leave be - pot up when they've got the first true leaf.

Kelvedon Peas - can go out.

Lettuce, onions & brassicas - leave be.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Wicked thanks mate with the peas should I seperate the plants or put one pot full per hole in the ground?

Never realised it'd be so long before putting toms out I'll prob wait a while next year before sowing!!

Also forgot I have some chilli's and sweet peppers in the conservatory??

Thanks again sweet peppers are sown a few seeds into a couple of 3in pots but they haven't come through yet.  These will need potting on but at what height/size?

Chilli's are in individual 3in pots and are about 2in tall at the moment - 3 mixed and 3 cheyenne

I'll try my best.

Leeks and onions - leave be - When should the onions go in?

Brussels & brassicas - leave be - pot up when they've got the first true leaf What's the 1st true leaf they already have 2 little ones?

Lettuce, onions & brassicas - leave be How big should lettuce be before planting out

Sorry for more questions!

Onions - mine went in when they were about 6" high and did well for me last year.

The first true leaves will be the next pair. The first ones are the "seed leaves" or to give them their correct name "cotyledons".

My lettuce sowing programme is this:

A small pinch in a pot.

Once big enough to handle, transplant into seed tray, (I do 15 in a large tray). At the same time sow another pinch of seed.

Grow the first lot on until they have at least 2 pairs of true leaves, then plant out. Then transplant your second lot of seed into the now empty seed tray and sow a third pinch.

Keep repeating the process and without having to think about it, you're assured of a succession of lettuce rather than a glut.

Hopefully you can adapt this to suit.

Maybe someone else can answer the pepper & chilli question as I've got to go out!

Will it hurt if I divide the pea plants up out of the pots or would I just be better off firing the pot full in at the spacings you gave me?

Lesson learned I'll be direct sowing from now on and not bother with starting them off in pots!!

There's 3 or 4 in each of your pots, try putting 3 or 4 pots in each foot of row, it about averages out.

I grow peppers in my conservatory, once they have 2 true leaves I plant them into individual 3 inch pots, then pot them on as they get bigger, I leave them in the conservatory even though I have a greenhouse, you do have to remember to water them well though because it get really hot in there

You can let them get a couple more leaves and then plant them out if you want  :)

Ok guys rather than start another thread can my brassicas go into the ground on the plot yet?

They are all in individual pots looking healthy apart from the brussels, which are doing well in a seed tray coz I'm out of pots for now!!
