If you saw the pic someone posted a few days ago of their asparagus already producing spears you might well be starting to panic (I'm not, nothing showing on mine yet and they've been in about 7 years!)

What a difference a day makes - one plant has its first nice thick spear about 3" long, another has 2 thin little spears (I've got at least 3 different varieties and that one has always produced spears of only pencil thickness - it might not still be there this time next year!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Me too - overnight one spear has appeared so far from 30 plants, but it's the first one and I'm so proud!!  :)

I have inherited some plants on the plot i have taken over, and now that they have started sprouting I am not sure what to do with them, i.e. when do I cut them?
I'd appreciate any tips from you experts out there.

I grew some from seed last year and now they are about 10 ins or so tall are they frost hardy enough to plant into the bed now as they are in the greenhouse at the mo?
This is the first age that has ever paid much attention to the future which is ironic since we may not have one !(Arthur c Clarke)

Apparently the real experts can pull them so they snap off just below soil level, ordinary folk like me use a short, sharp knife to cut them off just below soil level - what's most important is to harvest them before the buds at the top of each shoot start to open out, as they then get progressively tougher - about 6" above ground is usually about the right height.

Still absolutely no sign of my asparagus .  Is that it then, nothing to come?  I will be sooooo disappointed especially as it can't be blamed on a harsh winter.

If it's any consolation the exciting discovery I mentioned in reply #16 has not resulted in an asparagus-eating frenzy - plenty of rain followed by plenty of warmth is what gets 'em going, and since then only the first of those has applied (think they've shrunk back underground if anything, although I can see a few more brave/reckless spears having a little look!)

Mine appear to have made an appearance, but one or two look a little wrinkled, just like the one on the right of you image. It looks like frost damage, its well and truly inedible...
