Advice on growing Dahlia's and Begonias
« on: March 27, 2012, 21:08 »
Hi

I have been given some dahlia tubers and begonia corns. Can someone please tell me if I can start them off in an my unheated greenhouse or do they need to be in the house until they start to grow?

Temperatures in an unheated greenhouse can still drop very low at night.

Both begonias and dahlias are frost tender and they do not like getting chilled at all.

It would be better to wait a while, or plant them and keep them indoors.

Begonia corms can just be placed on a shallow tray of soil, kept moist (make sure you get them the right way up, curved side down, dipped side up) and shoots will soon grow. Thye can be properly planted when the weather is more certain

Can someone explain to me what should ne done when you want to grow on Begonia destiny seedlings from jpd?. I purchased a few hundred and they were in tip top condition when they arrived, and after the 24 hour period keeping them in doors I then potted them up in the greenhouse. In about 3 days or so they started dying off and I lost the lot. I then got the same again and lost them aswell.I have a wood burner in my greenhouse which I lit every night to keep the frost away but still no success.
Thanks
              Pete.

Welcome to the site Pete  :D

1. How big were the seedlings when you got them?

2. What did you pot them into?

3. What were you doing for watering?

4. Can you describe how the plants died - did they fall over at soil level, were they shrivelling on the leaves, etc?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi,
And thanks for coming back to me on this topic.ok I got them from jersey plants direct and they were probably 1"  in height and in fantastic condition.when I got them they were a bit dry so I sat them in a tray of water for a bit til the soil was wet and left them in the kitchen for 24 hours.I then replanted them in levington seedling compost and then a few day's later they started to go very thin at the stem and fall over, some had a little white mark on the leaves aswell and some just collapsed onto the soil.I hope this is enough information for you to have an idea.

I wonder whether it's either:

a) a problem with the compost, or

b) damping off disease, if they keeled over at soil level.

Hi yorki, i cant say it's the compost as i have used it on all the rest of my plants and i have about 700 in the hot house and they are all very good.if you purchased these plug plants then how would you deal with them from day one because i have done something wrong.

I've never grown them so have no specific advice.

Hopefully someone else will know  :)

Sound's like damping off to me too. Phone the supplier and see what they say. You may get a replacement.

Damping off is a cultivation issue and not something which the nursery is likely to have caused - particularly as the plants were in excellent condition on arrival.

You may be lucky with replacements, but don't expect it.
