My first attempt at it, saw these on the allotment on a hazel tree, cut a load off and started to build a wigwam, did 4 in the end, im well happy, i will plant them up soon, should look quite good when all the peas are on them crawling all over the sticks

What peas are you growing?

You will need a bit more than that for them to cling onto. They don't climb like runner beans.

DD everyone was saying they dont climb up nets, and you have to have pea sticks, thats what i did???

They would not cling to the mesh to originally used, they need something finer. They put out tendrils which they use to climb and they would not be able to wrap themselves around anything to thick.

Peas sticks are used as a support, not necessarily something to climb up and you need a lot - you're looking at making a small fence with them either side of the pea row.

You need a lot, hence why I use the method you've already seen.

The pea is called Kelvedon Wonder (could have been worse i could have gone out and bought a tin of peas from Tescos ((even mushy peas)))

from what you see, how many plant can i get round a wigwam, and how many would you recommend i plant then? thanks

Kelvedon Wonder is a good pea - they're the ones in my main photos. They only grow to about 18" high, so really you did not need such high supports.

You could wrap some twine around the bottom 18" or so every 2" or 3" for them to cling on to.

You could try a double row, outside the wigwam, with the peas staggered and spaced every 3" or so. (Or throw a handful in like I do!).

Just be prepared to "help" them with a bit more twine if needs be, if they flop outwards.

I just pruned our apple tree, the offcuts have been trimmed to about 3 ft lengths, and branches left on in one plane, these will be going up the plot for my peas, but a lot of the twigs and side branches have been left, mostly on one flatish plane to allow the peas to get a grip, failing that I have pea netting bought cheap at wilkinsons last year in the end of season sale. but I thought to put that over the plants to keep the birds off.
