Creeping Buttercup
« on: October 23, 2007, 15:59 »
Hi folks, pleased to meet you.

I've just got myself an allotment and it's covered with creeping buttercup.
The bloke who had it before me rotorvated the plot's weeds and then abandoned it! I've been digging them out and covering the areas with black sheeting but was wondering if i am fighting a losing battle and should be doing something else.

Your views and tips would be great, and please remember i'm broke and i'm a novice so cheap products and things explained simply are a must.

Hello Hodgey.

I don't know if I can be much help but 'those who know more' will be along soon.

All I can say is I get this in my garden at home, luckily not at the allotment. It is incredibly invasive, setting new root systems every few inches. I try and get it all out by hand when I clear my beds for replanting, but I've never really succeeded. I can't spray as it is usually intermingled with other planrs I want to keep.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

If you are a non-organic gardener, your easiest way is round-up.

The cheapest is to dig them all up. Long, hard job. But you will get there.

Covering them up: I find they can beautifully blanch under cover and treat stalks as roots.  If you hoed first and then covered the area would work better. :)
