Lettuce cheat!
« on: March 25, 2012, 22:43 »
I cheated!  Yesterday, when I went to the supermarket I picked up the windowsill box of mixed lettuce.  It cost me £1.  I had every intention of keeping it on my windowsill until my lettuces make an appearance BUT as the weather has been so beautiful, I decided to plant them out.  I thought I'd get abot a dozen plants.  No, there are so many I lost count.  There are certainly over 100.  At this point, I thought who cares if it's cheating?
I think I might become overrun with lettuces!!
I'm not young enough to know everything!

I do it 2 or 3 times a year. Lidls have a red/green mix for about 60p and I get 50/60 plants. I've still got a few that made it through the Winter outside in tubs and they're going like the clappers before bolting.
I do sow my own seed too.
We eat LOTS of lettuce and I haven't had to buy one for nearly 2 years by growing all year round outside.

I can't imagine why I've never done it before.  They looked pretty good this morning.  Will just have to keep an eye out for frost, methinks.

You do get a good mix usually.... and a glut of lettuce to give away too  :D :D :D

I've never had so many plants in the ones I have bought

I've done that before too. :) It gives you an almost instant easy start at a lettuce crop. :D

It's a good way of getting a head start if you have got out of synch with the sowing. I find lidl's very good too,I try to get some in the soil borders in the greenhouse over the winter.

I get the ones from Lidl too. I use the leaves first though, and they come back fine. The rest of the year I use a spicy cut-and-come-again mix.

Also do it with parsley and chives. Once the chives are in they last for years, the parsley I do every spring, and they make good plants by the time last year's have gone to seed.

might sound silly but...the red/green mix, is it just packet lettuce you use? Do you just get a pice and plant it in a pot? new to growing so not sure how everyone is doing this.
cheers

Hi Mike,

I think it is the living salads style lettuce that Sooz is using.  Its a good idea.
