ive accidently dug up my shallots
« on: March 25, 2012, 17:59 »
in late december i put in row of shallots, and must have forgotten about them as today i dug them up, i quickly replanted them, although they seem to have filled out a little, some had tiny roots but many did not.  is this normal shallot development? will they survive the digging and moving.?  they were banana shallots i think .this is the second year of my allotment, still alot to learn. ( note to self - mark your rows better ::)

In my experience, shallots don't really get going until the ground has warmed up. I planted some in Jan/Feb last year and they took ages to get going. So I'm only just thinking of putting some in now.

If you dug them up intact and replaced them gently, give them a feed and they'll probably be fine. They don't like being pushed into the soil too hard, the ones that are rooting will be OK, the ones that aren't should take off in a week or two as long as you were gentle with them!

Over time I've accidentally dug some up. I just get the hand shovel, dig a nice little hole, place the shallot in carefully so not to break any roots, and gently fill soil around it. When it's ready, it'll start growing again.

Same goes for young onions and garlic.

Strange this post should come up today. In the last couple of hours, I've transplanted some shallots. I had some growing in an old plastic sink bowl (planted late Dec). I thought it may be a bit shallow so I put them into individual 9" pots. They had a super root system, so I anticipate they will come along nicely.
