« on: March 23, 2012, 20:47 »
Hi there!
just got a new allotment and we want some chickens - which are the best breed to get? and how high must the fence be to contain them?
Cheers looking forward to your replies  :)

Warrens, black rocks and rhode island reds are about the best. 6ft to 8 ft high will be high enough. Smiths at wombwell have just got some more warrens in £5 each so ive been told it a battery hen place that sells them before they become a caged hen sold straight off the lorrys. hope this helps, also there is a auction on at highgate dog track next to thurnscoe every saturday 11am start  :)

Depends what type of chuck you want, wether you want them for eggs or meat or looks  if you google chicken breeds they will show you pictures of all the breeds and what they are best for  :D

Get well foxproofed and set up first - all info on this site.  It takes time to work it all out I found.

Hello, I agree with nerdle get foxproofed...decide how many hens you want...check out the breeds...As Tony H says do you want meat birds or eggs or a mixture..Make sure your coop is adequate and foxproof. Do a bit of research it really helps.Check out local vets and feed suppliers. Ask loads of questions on the forum, and have a look in the old posts section.
It does'nt matter which hens you buy if the fox gets them, so good luck and welcome to the forum... ;)
