Feeding spuds in bags
« on: March 23, 2012, 08:59 »
I have just planted my Red Duke Of Yorks in bags with compost. I heard on the radio that you should fedd feed feed spuds to get a good crop as well as water. They didn't say at what stage though. Should I do this from the offset and what do I feed them BF and Bone ?

Also, an old bag of compost I harvested last year's spuds has sprouted so I must have left one in by mistake. I am going to leave it to see if I get another crop.

Correct.

I don't do spuds in bags. I viewed the thread, but could not advise. Therefore I didn't post.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've just potted some taters. I mixed a few chicken manure pellets in with the compost.....then covered it with fresh compost so Bonnie and Bella don't think it's snack time!

Unless you know you left some spuds in the other sprouted pot, I wouldn't bother keeping it going, unless you have plenty of space. It could be a tiny spud in there which will come to nothing, and the compost has already been used for spuds so could be harbouring disease.

Might be wrong, often am! :D

Its my first time with spuds in a barrel in the greenhouse. Mine are Rocket.

I read your post and have been wondering about it myself so waited for you get some replies ::)

Mine had a good dollop of muck in the bottom of the barrel so i'm wondering if that will do.  They are growing so fast i cant keep up with the earthing up, they need doing every day
I think because of the speed they are growing I'll have all tops and no tats. :(

never fed mine - wonder if that is why they didn't amount to much , I just thought it was because I was later popping them in  ???
Staffies are softer than you think.

Last year we used tomato feed every 2 weeks and had better results than the year before when we didn't feed them at all.  Haven't tried potato fertiliser as JBA recommends for pot grown.

We had loads of spuds planted in bags and old builders sacks at the bottom of the garden  as well as half the allotment; for the spuds  to break up the ground. Newish allotment, needs work. :(

We slung a handful of potato fertiliser in the sacks and as they grew added a handful more. When we ran out we reverted to growmore. We had good crops from the bags but not as quite as good as from the allotment.

We also put a few slug pellets in to stop the little ......

The other reason we had so many in  bags were that we had more seed potatoes than we had space for on the lottie.

Hope this helps. We do tend to add fertilisers in handfuls rather than work out how much we should use.

The first year I grew pots in bags I didnt feed them and had a pretty good yield (they were only first and 2nd earlies). However This year I was planning to mix some chicken pelets in with the compost when Im topping up the pots.  Havent a clue if its right or not but im giving it a go.

As for leaving the other left over to grow, I wouldnt!! I tried it my 2nd year of spud in bags it wasnt pretty!!!

If you are growing spuds in commercial compost bought from a garden centre or similar they will definitely need feeding. If, like me,  you make your own potting compost you could get away without it but I still use a liquid feed every week through the growing season. Spuds need more potash than you find in bought composts to produce a good yield so something like tomato feed will work fine for them.
