Its not a chemical type smell,but the better clue is whats left after you light a few small fibres   .If its a grey colour and breaks up easly then its most likly wool.
If its black and hard its poly/nylon :wink:

We've always used a piece or carpet on our compost heap - downside up and upside down.  It tends not to get soggy then  :D
