thanks, I lost my internet access before work, so here is what I did. I put them in the greehouse in my south facing garden, so only sun till lunch, with the flap zipped down halfway so hopefully thay wont poach or freeze. I should stick to grownig sunflower seeds. They can grow as tall as they like

You do need to keep a very close eye on them in sunny weather in the greenhouse.  It will get pretty warm in there - which can stress them out to the extent that they wilt and don't recover.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You never mentioned tomatoes - a completely different kettle of fish to pumpkins!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I know I never mentioned them, they were an after thought really, though they may benefit, they didnt. When I left for work it was a lovely day, terrible when I got home, it was too late, only lost a couple, they all look fine today  :)

I need to learn one condition does not suit all plants :(

There's always re-sowing for your tomatoes too...  They too, are often best left til early April. I've even sown tomatoes in the outdoor cloche in early May that did catch up on the March sowings and were stronger looking plants

I made the mistake last year of planting pumpkins too early. I managed to keep them alive until planting out time but they had become so root bound that they just remained stunted and sad little things and produced very little fruit.

My advice would be to chalk it up to experience and sow again in April.

I think after sowing as per seed packet instructions I would definitely sow later next year than the packet states. I sowed a lot in Feb and the days were just too short to get tthem enough light. I will resow pumkins. When exactly should I start to sow these? I think my tomatoes are ok. I have loads and think there are quite a few healthy ones in them. Some have nice thick green stems whilst a few are pale and a little long. They were sown in different parts of the house so probably explains the difference in appearance.

Its all been a learning curve and I have made mistakes that I wont make again ::)

I sow mine in the 2nd half of April. This seems late but they grow so quickly once germinated
