Carrots and manure conundrum
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:53 »
I've read and been told not to manure the bed I'm going to grow carrots and parsnips in because it will make them fork.

What I cant find is why it will make them fork.

Is there a way of feeding the bed that wont cause forking?

Regards, WG   :)

Carrots really don't need feeding, I never have.

It's when the fine tap root hits a lump of manure that forking occurs.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

So the problem is not with the manure itself, but that it is a hard object stopping them growing?  Stones, or other objects would cause the same problems?   I grew parsnips last year, and every single 1 forked, and these was being grown in an area where no manure had been added (certainly not in the past say 10years anyway).   If you was to screen the soil removing all hard objects, they would still grow in a bed that had composted manure added?   Sorry to jump on a thread of someone already asking a question, with a question of my own.

The lumps and stones are the main culprits. Whilst carrots don't need a lot of nutrients, soil with really well rotted manure,  screened to get the stones and lumps out should be fine.

For the reasons that DD has suggested I always grow my parsnips and carrots in deep containers with far better results than I'd get from my veg plot which is full of stones.

I riddle home made compost and mix it with sharp sand and a little BFB

The pic shows what I typically get from a 10 litre flower bucket
