Sultana green bean seed question
« on: March 17, 2012, 21:36 »
I grew some sulatana green climbing beans last year and they were fantastic.  I saved seed from them and was hoping to plant them this year.  I have read a bit on this site about heirloom seeds and now I am worried that the seed will not come true or will be inferior.  Does anyone know if I sow this seed whether I will get the same plant I grew it from or do you need to buy heirloom seeds???!! I am a bit confused about it all

If you only grew these, and no other sort of french style bean or runner bean bearby, then they will certainly be true to type.

If there were others, there is a very slight chance that you might get a few mixed up kinds

Yours doesn't appear to be an  F1 hybrid variety so should produce identical plants the next year assuming they have not beencross pollinated.
French beans are usually self pollinating (they do not cross  easily) but you can't be 100% sure.

Saying that I'm still growing saved beans and peas  ;)

These are self-pollinating, (within the same flower), and in all probability will reproduce true to type.

However, there is always a small chance of pollination from another bean - this has happened to me with runner beans and climbing purple French beans.

Chances are it won't happen and any rogue plants are easy to spot, if not at the outset, then when the beans set.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
