Mites... baths for the chooks?
« on: March 17, 2012, 08:39 »
Hi all,

Every week when I clean the chickens out I check them over to make sure they're all ok. But last week I discovered two of my hens looking very down and sorry for their selves, so I checked them over and they are covered in mites and mite eggs all round their bums.. I new about mites and I've been powdering them everday to try and kill the live ones but I can't do anything about the eggs until they've hatched so I was thinking a bath to try and get them off? Is a bath a good idea or not and has anyone ever given their chickens baths?

Many thanks.

Most people report on here that their chooks love baths and then being dried off with a hairdryer. I don't know if this will hlep to remove the eggs. They are more likely to be lice than  mites. Hoepfully someone will be along with more help shortly.

A thought - You could use a kitten strength Frontline treatment for fleas and assorted lurgies. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

yes as Sassy said - use some frontline - either kitten strength or as I do the spray. Just a quick squirt between the shoulder blades (first part the feathers).
Frontline is not licensed for poultry but my vet prescribes it for my hens.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Okay thanks very much for the help! I heard warm water helps gets the eggs off so i thought i could give it a try! I've never seen live/mites this bad! I feel so guilty as she is such a sweet hen  :(  :(

Don't feel guilty. It sounds as though you do your best for them - what more could they ask :)
