How to plant the sets
« on: March 16, 2012, 20:15 »
Hi there  :)

I have 100 onion stuttgarter giant sets.

When would be the best time to plant these? I see some have planted already. Anyone have experience of these? It says to plant in rows 6" apart is that between rows or between bulbs or both?

Also does it get totally buried or do you leave the top part exposed ( as it were  ::))

Hope these qs are not to silly and dont bore the pants off the veterans

Thanks in advance.....x

I plant them 6" apart in rows 12" apart, leaves plenty of room for hoeing.

Contrary to what the books say, I plant mine so the tip is just below the surface, so the birds can't see them.

Unless you are expecting a really cold spell, I'd put them in now..
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks very much.. We dont tend to get much frost here as the sea is a stone throw from the plot so hopefully we will be ok. it is still quite cold though.

DON'T just push 'em into the soil and compress the ground beneath.  Dig a likkle 'ole.         Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Plant your sets approx 9" apart to allow for weeding, this distance allows for a larger onion, plant with the straw just poking above ground level. Then get a 4"plank lay on top of the sets and walk on it , this will compress the soil, and stop the birds pulling them up. before anybody says this could damage the sets,I have done it for years and it works perfectly..

I plant them with a bit showing and then draw a small ridge which covers them and hides them from the birds. Once the onion shoots and they are hoed the ridge falls away.

I believe you can cut off any really long bits at the top of the set so it gives the birds less chance of getting a grip, but I like the idea of using a plank to compress the soil, especially as it has probably been dug over. I will try planting them so the tips don't show, but will have to put a length of cleamtis netting over the bed so the cats (4) don't scratch them up.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
