Piece of advice please
« on: October 22, 2007, 16:33 »
Hi Guy's,
As a novice, once again I'm on the scrounge for some advice please. I don't know what the weather's like where you all are, but it's really cold in West Sussex at the moment. I feed my Chucks on mixed corn and layers mash in the morning, and for their "tea" they have pasta or rice mixed with veg(along with tip bits during the day). Would it be o.k to warm up their "tea" during the cold weather, just to take a bit of the cold away.
Any advice welcomed........Thanks

They do love a bit of warm food Smithy.  When it's cold I add some boiling water to layers pellets and mix in a few nice things - meal worms, sunflower hearts, even a bit of tuna (in spring water) sometimes.  Hot and moist but not sloppy - that's the chicken food before anyone comments

But do not give them too many non chicken diet foods.  Their health and egg laying will suffer  :(

Veg anytime but not too much of one thing at a time (tummy trouble   ) - greens every day is good  :!:

Pasta, rice, bread, sunflower seeds, definitly treats.  My chooks only get treats once in a blue moon - I'm really strict   but they are healthy and lay for Britain (Excpt for Hattie who's moulting   )  :D

If you are feeding them pellet then that is ALL they need, it is a complete balanced diet.

Add some greens every day, oyster and grit, a small handful of mixed corn each in the late afternoon to keep them warm overnight and you have a happy spoilt chook.

Warm food in the winter is nice for them but NOT vital, chickens don't naturally have a way to heat their food

Please remember too that the advice and opinions give on these forums are those of the poster only  :D

whenever we have jacket potatoes we give the skins to the hens (when they're still warm) - and they go crazy for them!

must try them on a warm mash (made aunty's way, not with potatoes), though it never gets that cold down here.

 The jacket is the best bit Rosemary :!:   Rub it with olive oil and a little salt before baking in a hot oven. Scrummy lovely crispy skins.  I'd fight the chooks for them
