How many raspberries canes??
« on: March 15, 2012, 11:55 »
I bought a raspberry cane the other day to grow againest a sunny fence but Im wondering how much fruit a single cane would produce??
Everybody seems to plant in multiples of at least 3. I only have a teeny garden and am just feeding myself. Would it be better to get more or maybe as mine is an early fruiting variety get a later fruiting one to extend the crop???
(Im very much a GYO newbie!!)

At a rough guess, you'd probably get 3 or 4 bowls full of fruit during the season. Problem is that will be over a period of a weeks, so you may only get half a dozen ripe at anyone time.

The plant will put out suckers, so next year you should have more than one cane as a matter of course.

If you have the space an autumn one sounds like a good idea.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The thing off GYO mag for claiming the potato growers set has raspberrys on the back. Variety is Polka and it says once established each plant can produce up to 2.5kg.

What do they mean by "once established"? That's very vague and covers a multitude of sins.

Polka are a primocane, (autumn fruiting) raspberry. They grow like weeds. After a couple couple of years getting established, for instance, they could be throwing up a dozen or more canes.

I've had one in a large pot for a few years now, as I only had a small backyard, and it's doing ok, small handfuls of fruit every few days - but now I have an allotment it's going to be moved there (tomorrow in fact  :D )
