Cow manure's my choice, without question.

As said before, horses are greedy, they'll wolf their food down without chewing properly so you may recieve something like grass seeds etc in thier dung.

Cows however, chew - swallow - back up, chewed again (the cud), via 4 stomachs (it is 4 innit?  ??? ).

And out comes 'liquid gold' from the other end!

its 4 yeh  :)

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh - if you didn't know it, this site extends way, way beyond the forums.

It pays to spend a bit of time having a look around.

I wonder at the idea of well rotted. Most of the weeds, woods shavings, whatever, just rot nicely over a year. I always expect to buy manure for next year, not this year.

I pay. The reason I pay is that the nice people who bring me their unwanted horse manure spend ages loading it in their trailer, transporting it and then unloading it whilst I am absent. I can afford it I pay very little really for the hour or two they spend on the job. We are all happy. I don't pay much, but wouldn't complain if I had to pay £25. I get good loads - if they feel its a bit short they bring some more and I actually pay £5.

Horse or cow. Well much of the difference for me is indistinguishable after a year.

My thought anyway ...

Ferret - I am in Sheffield and have used the Howarth Lodge stables - where the Rotherway meets the Bawtry road. They charge a £1 a bag if you fill the bags. I no longer use them as I came across a place near the Longshaw estate where it was £1 a bag already filled. I have heard there is a place near Crosspool in Sheffield where they pile it up and let you take it for free. This is all horse muck by the way - good luck.

Just because a word is in the dictionary doesn't mean it is good English.

Ok, back to the other load of manure that is "The Topic".

It also depends what quality of food the animal eats. Cows on pasture (grass) will produce muck with lower quality than horses that are stabled and fed hay or barley. Horse muck tends to make a higher quality manure than cow muck as horses tend to eat better food and cows do chew their food twice to extract as much goodness out of it as possible.

horse muck for me!  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

I seem to remember last year everyone was saying not to use any manure because of aminopyralid. Some really unfortunate member completely ruined his wifes plot by being kind and getting her some manure. I cant remember who it was but it was really sad.

Is this no longer a worry? I took the advice of the forum then and have not used manure since.

As I grow potatoes in pots I was thinking of adding some manure and if there is a problem it would be contained. If not I could then use it as a mulch ones my potatoes were done.

It should be less of a problem but you still need to be sure of your source! or do the bean test to check it's ok before spreading it anywhere

Horse manure according to NPK in manures is slightly better than cow. We get as much as we want free, from the stables across the road from our allotments.
