How do I dispose of clay?
« on: March 13, 2012, 14:23 »
We've been doing some digging in the garden and we've dug out some big mounds of really horrible solid clay, and I don't know what to do with it. I wouldn't have thought they'd  be happy if I put it in the garden waste bin, and I certainly wouldn't want it in the compost bins, but what else can I do with it? Any ideas?

The greenwaste here specifies no soil..  Best bet would be the local tip (or whatever the PC term is now) Ours has one for "soil".

Pity you don't live in Sheffield - I'm always on the lookout for "really lovely solid clay" to try to improve my sandpit of a garden plot!

If there is a lot I think you have to bag it up and take it to your nearest dumpit site, although you would not be the first person to "lose" it a bit at a time in your domestic waste bin!  8)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Yes, I agree...  the local "recycling centre" would be your best option.

I have a mound of mostly clay we excavated from a pond and also where a lot of weedy/soily stuff has been dumped as we've cleared. My plan is to sow poppies on it and make a feature out of an eyesore...

eventually the clay will become soil. Eventually...

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a nice clay oven, liven up the barbies. Trouble is I don't think it's the right sort of clay. The stuff you dig out of the ground is nothing like the nice pliable clay you do modelling with, is it. This stuff is so solid you'd have trouble bending it, no matter how much water you added.

I put clay cores of soil I took out of my plot with a bulb planter for leek holes into my compost bin and it broke down really beautifully.

Clay is clay is clay (unless your plot is clay then it's a pain in the rear end).
