Garlic Chives Germination
« on: March 13, 2012, 08:25 »
I have had some garlic chives sowed for about 3 weeks now. Everything else has come up (except broad beans and carrots). Shouldn't the chives have shown their faces by now ? It's a new packet.

I seem to recall that it is a bit hit and miss, I sowed a whole packet in a pot only to get about 40% germinate, having said that the 40% that did come up has gone mad over the last couple of years.
I cant remember how long it took to pop tho.

This site  http://www.ehow.com/how_2063815_grow-garlic-chives.html

suggests they need warmth to germinate and that they can take a long while  ;)

I bought some Garlic Chive seeds last year and had several attempts at getting them to grow, had no luck though - managed to get one or two to germinate but they soon died :(

Am having another go at sowing some in small pots in the coldframe but might try getting some going in the propagator too.

I tried them last year and they took at least six weeks in a heated propagator with a 50% success rate after potting on.

I sowed 2 pots of these yesterday, I have them just sat on the kitchen window sill I did not think they would be such a nightmare to germinate :( I have just popped a zip lock bag over each pot so we will see how they go............

Not sure if I should bother sowing again as there is no logic why NONE of the seeds comes up. John innes seed sowing compost in a pot in the greenhouse. Not rocket science so why no germination ?

i sowed mine in the unheated GH a few weeks ago and they only took around a week to germinate. maybe it was a bad batch of seeds?

Perhaps they didn't like the days when the temperatures soared during the day and then it got cold at night   I'd wait till the weather is more reliable.
