spuds in pots?
« on: March 11, 2012, 19:58 »
Was hearing on t radio the other day that you can put some first earlies in pots as the soil's too cold at the moment. What size of pot will suffice and how many do I put in? plus I take it you put them in the greenhouse? Any advice? thanks, Kev

I put mine in large bags, compost bags with extra holes in will do. Put 2 or 3 spuds in the bottom with about 4 inches of soil. As they grow keep filling with soil until full then empty out after flowering.
I start them off in the greenhouse, and move them outside but only if there is no chance of frost.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

I would aim for 18"+ wide, it needs quite a bit of depth - you put the spuds in about 6" of compost to start with, then add extra layers as the foliage grows; I'd say max 3-4 tubers for an 18" pot.

Don't forget to water them lots when the foliage is growing until it dies down.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Growing potatoes in pots, buckets, bags is one of the best and trouble free ways of growing potatoes. So long as they have plenty of depth and plenty of decent feed you will get a decent crop.

Old car tyres are great for spuds, nice and dark and you can always add a tyre when you want!!  Also good for leeks carrots and parsnips, and cylindrical beetroot too x

I'm not knocking the last post, but someone please explain to me why they have to bring car tyres down to our site to grow things in, when the soil is perfectly capable of supporting plant life by itself?

It's more rubbish, like carpets, for the next plot holder to remove.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grew my spuds in Airpots last year and had a beautiful crop of perfect potatoes. The pots look fantastic as well. They are a little pricey but I have just unrolled and reassembled them (they store flat) and they look good as new.

I guess I will only be able to work out if they have been worth it when I know how long they last but they were a real pleasure last year and that is worth something to.

All I need now is my potatos to arrive from T&M!

Case in point:

The plastic has now been removed, the tyres are still there and they are being used to grow things in - but only in the ground they've been put on, they're not being used to raise the soil level.

Sorry - I diverge!

I may have this completely wrong but I am only a hobby grower!

I've just put all my spuds in large 30L plant pots available from The Garden Superstore for about £4 each.  They are re-usable and extremely robust with good strong handles on each side.  I've put in my earlies, second earlies and main crop with compost and a bit of feed.  They're in a relatively sheltered spot in my southfacing garden up against a wall.  If frost threatens I can shift them into the greenhouse or chuck some fleece / newspaper over.  I've had lovely crops like this in the past.  For me, the best bit is tipping them out.  You know you've got all the spuds and won't have any left overs in the ground sprouting up later on.  Yum.
