Strange runners roots
« on: March 11, 2012, 01:11 »
I was digging over my runners bed and the roots I pulled up were huge woody knobbly things, completely different from the roots last year that were quite fibrous with lots of nitrogen nodes.
Is it because I left them in over Winter?
The crop last year was blooming marvellous so the plants weren't diseased or anything.

Very likely. They do need lots of time to develop those nodules. I just chop them up a bit and leave them in place.

As far as I know runner beans always produce large tuberous roots (they are herbaceous perennials and can be grown as such, although they have to be lifted and protected in winter in this country so I suspect few people bother to do that.)

I dig them out, chop and compost because as VC has observed they take a long time to rot down if left in situ.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
