Should I pot on my lemon tree
« on: March 10, 2012, 20:00 »
I got this tree about a month ago from a local nursery i.e. mid february.

No major problems so far, and have been feeding the dish it stands in with some Citrus fertiliser.

The nursery told my friend who bought it that it needed potting up asap as the roots were protruding from the top.

When I called them, the guy on the phone who seemed quite knowledgeable said I shouldn't disturb it at this time of the year.

So I'm not going back to them for advice as they're conflicting.  What do you think?

Thanks everyone

That's a cryptic question for someone with the username JT101. :)

So back to the lemon tree

Lemons do not like their trunks buried in the soil and so just a scratch of soil over the top to rebury those protruding root may be all that is needed. Soil, not multipurpose compost, mind.

They do not need repotting every year, but the only way to really tell is to carefully tip the tree out of its pot. They need some growing space around the roots: an inch is enough, or they end up sitting it wet soil when watered without enough roots to deal with the amount of water on offer, if you see what I mean.

Just make sure that you do not over water, as dry on the top does not mean dry down below, and lemons like to dry partially out in between watering.

Hope that helps  :D
