Pea variety advice sought please
« on: March 09, 2012, 10:59 »
Hi
My father in law (83yrs old) has asked me to buy for him a packet of climbing pea seeds.  He is relatively fit and active but I imagine he won't want anything that grows to 8ft tall.  Given that this is the only veg he really likes, high yield would be good.
Suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks
OG

Kelvedon Wonder & Hurst Greenshaft are good yielding readily available peas.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Kelvedon Wonder & Hurst Greenshaft are good yielding readily available peas.

I always grow both of these.

KW grows to about 18 inches high
HG grows to about 30 inches high

Both of those mentioned are excellent.

Alderman is worthy of consideration also. It is a very heavy cropping climber, perhaps the best, up to 6ft and has a prolonged picking season. Can be grown like runners beans.

Thanks everyone. I've gone with the Hurst Greenshaft variety.  Thanks again.

Kelvedon Wonder & Hurst Greenshaft are good yielding readily available peas.

They may be good but they cartainly do not climb. DD must read the question!

Climbing peas age generally over 1.5 metres

The OP wants them for his elderly FIL.  I think Hurst Greenshaft will suit him perfectly.

I agree with the above. I grew both Alderman and the greenshaft. Alderman do not stop growing at 6ft, and they can be a bit of hassle to support in comparison with greenshaft. Overall tast, cropping and ease i think greenshaft is my fave.
