My very first seedlings are through!
« on: March 07, 2012, 19:10 »
And I'm as proud as a new mum lol.

The only thing I've ever grown before is a sunflower when I was a kid.

Lifted up the propagator lids today to find my cucumbers have poked their lovely little heads out of the soil. Am resisting the urge to go back every five mins for another look lol.  :D

I've a feeling I've caught the gardening bug now.

erm i dont know how to put this - but i think your a bit early with the cuc's, they grow fast and unless you've got a greenhouse they will get verry leggy!

hope i haven't upset you?

oh dear. i did follow the instructions on the back of the packet.
am also growing from seed some peppers, chives, leeks, rhubarb (i know that will take years to be any good) and leeks. I've got a mini unheated greenhouse in the garden for later. Am just trying to make a start before I get my plot in the next few weeks.

Oh well, i'll just cross my fingers and hope for a heatwave.

The packets do this to you.

They'll give the very earliest you can sow in the very south of the country. Here in the midlands it'll be another good few weeks before I sow mine - and they're destined for a heated greenhouse.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

i think weve all got our fingers crossed for a heat-wave, you never know the cuc's may be fine, the rest of the things you have sown will be fine - the leeks can grow in the unheated greenhouse now as the dont like heat.

wonderful feeling isn't it, yorkiegal

your cucumbers may be OK - I've got a couple started already, they're on the windowsill with foil behind them to make the most of the limited daylight and are looking good so far...  (I can't take credit for the foil idea but it works  :D )

Hope you've got plenty of room - they're could well grow a bit in the couple of months before they can go into an unheated greenhouse!

Foil - now there's an idea!

Could get yourself a cheap little paraffin heater for your greenhouse. Will keep your little greenhouse chill free unless it gets unseasonably cold.

Cucumbers are notorious for dying even when you think you've provided perfect conditions for them - if you succeed I will beg you to reveal your secret, if not you can always try again in a month or so's time.

I've been growing veg for about 50 years now - the magic of germinating seeds and raising plants has never worn off for me and I hope it doesn't for you either yorkiegal.   :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

lol i foresee my house being taken over by plant pots soon.

It's a learning curve though. I know I won't get everything right first time.

Cucumbers are notorious for dying even when you think you've provided perfect conditions for them...

so mourn and grieve for them now, and be amazed and delighted if they make it!

I was going to plant mine soon, I planted them the 9th last year and though I haven't noted when they went into the greenhouse I was eating them by 28th June so I tmust have been May some time...long time looking after them. Will wait until end of month I think

I put some rhubarb seeds in three years ago and got about 30 plants and my lot do not like rhubarb so a few too many for me   The two plants that I did keep are very big and I had several stalks from them last year so they do grow quickly.

I also am very good at killing cucumbers.  :D
