Swollen girl
« on: March 04, 2012, 13:53 »
One of my ex batts (she's about 2-3 years old) is very swollen and is walking like John Wayne.   She feels like she hal at least 2 eggs in her but hasn't layed for some time.  What can I do to help her?

You could try the warm bath treatment for about half an hour.  This may help her lay the eggs naturally.  Carefully handle her so as not to break the eggs inside her.  Dry her with a towel and then hairdryer on low setting.

Vaseline or cooking oil for lubricant around and in the vent area may also help.  Others have used lubricant and extracted the eggs with their fingers.  They may break doing this so try the warm bath first.

Keep us updated and good luck.

If she is left somewhere quiet, warm and dark after her bath she might pass them herself.  This could take a few hours.  You can lube the vent which might help her.

OK washed and blow dried. And then lubricated at both ends with veg oil.  couldn't feel anything when I went in But then I didn't go that far in, One of the strangest sensations ever , and she looked a bit shocked to be honest. ???  I have put her back with the flock and shes having a preen.

Can you tell her eggs from your other hens?  If not better to have her on her own to lay so you know she has cleared the blockage.  Let her have a feed and drink first and then you could keep her in a box with ventilation overnight.

Her eggs are usually the biggest so I should be able to tell.

 :(  No joy.

The wife took her to the vet today and she has had a "huge injection"  of what I don't know but she should be free of them in 24 hours.  The bank balance is now £31.60 lighter

Double ouch, one for your bank balance and the other for your hen.   :(

Hope it does the job.

 :(

It didn't work.

Had to have her put to sleep tonight, she was suffering from peritonitis and the vet thinks her uterus had probably ruptured.

RIP Edna

At least she had over a year of good life after the battery farm.

That's such a shame.  :(

She was such a gentle bird and always the first to go to bed  :D

Down to 7 now, 3 ex batts and 4 from youngsters.

Please Please if people out there suspect they have an egg bound girl, seek treatment ASAP.
