Best yellow courgette
« on: March 03, 2012, 17:21 »
I have just decided that this year I will have a go at a yellow courgette for the first time as well as the usual Nero di Milano.  Should look nice together on the plate.

Also I haven't  bought a packet of seeds for at least 7 weeks and I am getting withdrawal symptoms.   :(

Which variety do people recommend?

I like Summer Ball, but it's a round one. It's lovely for taste, raw or cooked, and has a heavy crop.

Lovely together on the plate but keep them apart in the garden as they are promiscuous and cross fertilise. ;)

Thanks for that tip Ice.  I think I will grow one variety on the plot and the other in the garden at home.

I think it only matters if you are intending to save seed for the following year -- for eating only, you can mix and match the plants without any issues.

Werked fer me, anyway   :D

I had a mixed bed last year and some grew in very strange ways indeed.

I would have thought that only the offspring would be "mixed race" if cross pollination occured - not the actual one growing as it gets it's genes from the previous plant / seed??

We have had some that seemed to grow faster on one side than the other and so were bent like a banana, and other swhere the top end was skinny and the bottom end fat.

I was told it was due to imperfect pollination.

I don;t know if it is true though

I've grown yellow and green courgettes in the same bed for the last 7 years and never had an obvious cross-pollination problem
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I love yellow courgettes as I like to use them in cakes and buns as they are easily disguised as carrot or lemon zest  :D

I like Goldrush, Golden Dawn and the little round one the Sunburst.  Last year I grew Soleil and liked that too. The yellow seem to me to have a better flavour  :)

My favourite yellow courgette has been Floridor - a round one, and a very productive variety.  Perhaps my imagination but it seemed nicer than Jemmer which is another equally productive variety.  Gold Rush wasn't so productive but thinking about it, that year had been cold and wet.

The yellow seem to me to have a better flavour  :)

I agree  ;) but I also like to slice green and yellows together in dishes and it makes it much more interesting.

I've grown yellow and green courgettes in the same bed for the last 7 years and never had an obvious cross-pollination problem

I grow a mix of courgettes (last year 6 different varieties - yellow, pale green, dark green, round, long ... it's a long story but I give a lot away) all in the same bed to improve chances of pollination and fruit production, and cross pollination does not affect the fruit.  Any deformaties are most likely to be weather related such as temperature or watering issues, as well as pollination - I found that if there has been a lack of rain but not enough to affect the plant, the fruit are developing slowly and then with water there is a surge of growth which can make them appear club shaped.  If temperatures have dropped when the fruit is forming and then warms up, the shape can be irregular.  Early fruits nearly always come out a little deformed and that's possibly pollination issues until the bees and other insects find the flowers.

this is exactly my thoughts when 'hybrid' squashes are discussed...unless there is someting going on with mitochondria or something...?
