it cost about 6 quid to make and works great.
I used a five gallon tub and cut a section out, then fitted a small float valve from B&Q and  conected this to a big water butt in my allotment.

I would raise it off the floor though, otherwise it will get full of mud in no time, if the hens are scratching around close by

Yes, raise it up so the can't poop or scratch dirt into it.  Great idea
