I think it's a magneto type. I had the cooling fan off hoping I could see into where the HT lead goes etc, and there was a big sticker there instead on the fly wheel saying don't hit with a hammer (magnet).

Have a look also on page "G" item 5
15520-883-881 "switch assembly oil alert unit" Just make absolutely sure your engine hasn't got one. If it has, disconect it and see if it runs. ;)

I guessing you don't have a contact cards so get a strip of  very fine emery or wet and dry paper and fold it double.
spring open the points slip the paper between, let the the contacts spring back, trap the paper and drag it through.
Repeat several times then finsh of with some clean cardboard to get rid of any grit.
If the crank has the cam to operate the points then turn till they open and check the gap.

Bottom of page 5 in the manual explains the point setting

What should the points gap be after cleaning etc?

And would / could the condenser and coil fail, or is it mainly just the points that need serviced (causing no spark)?

There could be problems with condenser or coil but Just concentrate on the points for the moment. If it was working when last used there should be enought gap to test for a spark after cleaning .

Someone before me has 'had a go', the screw that holds the points in place has been chewed a wee bit.

I'm not going to go any further in case I do more harm than good.

I'll be taking it to work now on Monday to let to pro's have a proper look.

They may even be able to get parts (if needed) off other old engines at work to get this one going.....

Never thought until now.... I work for a plant hire company, should've gone there first

But here's me, thinking it would be something simple that I could do myself.....  ::)

Took the engine to work today.

One of our fitters has had a brief look at it, (been a typical Monday - manic!), and has said there's only 'half a spark' .

There's one there, but it's very faint, not enough for the engine to fire and run though.

Grind in the valves. the compresion should make it very difficult to pull over

The compression's fine.

Fitter's had a better look today, and has said the coil pack is knackered!  :(

Guess I'm off to source a new unit, that's IF I can still get one because of the age of the engine.

Found this site for finding a coil pack....

Do you think it'll be (nearly) one size fits 'most'??
