Thanks for that - I'll leave them in place as you advise. 

I've only got about a dozen left from 100 bulbs - unless some have also been washed deeper into the ground with December's rain. 

I don't have chicken pellets - but have growmore pellets - will that be a reasonable alternative feed?

I'm with DD on this, however, if you only have 12 all over the place, that's another story, move them, or more like: s** them. Plant spring ones.

I never feed onions once they are planted  always prep the beds well in advance of planting then all you need to do is keep an eye on the watering.
