How do you start your brassicas?
« on: February 22, 2012, 11:59 »
When you sow/start your brassicas do you:-

1, sow them in a seed tray and prick out into cells and plant out into the plot.

2, sow them straight into cells and plant out into the plot.

3, sow them in a cold frame then plant out into the plot.

4, sow into an outdoor seed bed then plant out into the plot.

5, In seed cells. One seed to a cell. Transplanted into 3" pots at the first true leaf stage. Hardened off & planted out when about 6" high. Initial temperature no more than a frost free greenhouse.

Just wondering  :)

5. None of the above.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sow into seed modules.  Intend to plant out but resort to buying replacement when own seedlings die...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hmmmmm, number 5 is doing well!
I may have to think about this method and take it on as my own!

Why do you transplant into the 3" pots?

I sow mine into cells and grow them on until their around 4" to 5" tall then plant out, the roots are prety substancial and i plant them right down to their first leaves and heel them in.

Not had any problems with this metod.

I've always sowed my seed in 2.5 inch pots (or thereabouts) and had some success and some failure.  I think I will try the sowing in individual cells this year to see if that makes any difference.

I also have clubroot so will have to see how I go on with that too .....  :tongue2:

Club root is the main reason.

A 3" pot gives them a good root ball and a head start.

Club root resistant varieties and early or late planting help, when the club root is not so active.

mmm, the poll only gives you one option to choose when in life, there may be different methods depending on what you are growing and when.  Most times I start off in pots then plant out later, some times in a seed bed, and sometimes even:

6. Sow direct in brassica bed and thin out if necessary

The title is how do you start your brassicas - so presuming this means everything else besides cabbages?  :)

Here is another brassica related question.

I have about six cabbages that I had started in pots in the summer last season, but I never got a chance to pop them into their final spot in the plot for overwintering.

I have them in a cold frame at the mo. Is there any point in planting them out now for this season - will they go to seed etc?

They are healthy enough.

To answer the question - I use cells, grow em on a while, pot them up for a while then in the cold frame.

Why besides cabbages?

Ok so there's sweedes and a couple of others but generall i meant sprouts, calabresse, sprouting broccoli, kale (etc) (etc)

The answer to your question richrua is they will go to seed if planted out.

Im fortunate on my plot at the moment and don't have clubroot so this is why i use method number 2.
I don't accept free plants off people either.
