Slight amendment, I had a few up in early July, the main harvest was on the 25th.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Agree with DD - again (I'm either going to have to wake up or start getting more controversial!)

Last year mine were planted about the middle of Feb and were ready in mid-July.

Same this year, hopefully with the same result - it's getting late-ish but not too late.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

thanks for the link DD, i had a quick look at your diary a couple of days ago, and noticed your massive garlic - but i dindnt know when you planted it.

it looks like i'll be going to the shops tommorow looking for garlic, hahaha  - if minegrow half the sizes of yours i'll be a happy man!

oh going off of topic DD where do you get your heritage pea seeds from?

Heritage seed library.

Started with just a few and multiplied them up over the years.

Thank you all for the advice! Haven't been online for a few days here as been organising allotment during the day and dealing with a very disruptive toddler not wanting to sleep in the evening.

I sowed my onions yesterday - sturon & red baron (morrisons), and stuttgarter (poundland), shallots (golden gourment - poundland and a red tinged shallot from Halwyn's Nursery where I live.

I actually ran out of space for the garlic so managed to get a few in at the end of some rows!

As for my alleged backache from a few weeks ago has been remedied by going to the allotment regularly!
A novice gardener and looking forward to getting seriously fit with my allotment!

The allotment is 16 ft wide and roughly 90 ft long split into 8 plots!

That's what some say about shallots, never heard it for garlic.

Anyway, you can plant on the shortest day by all means, but what's the point in harvesting if it's not ready?
