Using drain pipe over celery and leeks
« on: February 21, 2012, 13:48 »
Hi guys being in the building game I am fortunate to have come across loads of bits of 4" drain pipe cut in lengths about a foot long.

I was wondering if they could be used to go over celery plants and leeks to save me having to earth up?

Also would they be any use for anything else on the plot to aid growing and starting things off or protection against the cold?

Cheers

I use it for leeks but not sure for celery because you need to check them over for slugs.
They can also be used for growing carrots and parsnips.

In the past I know many gardeners did use this technique for celery, but as Terry says, with the increase overall of slugs, it's like a magnet for them unless you're willing to check daily for slugs and damage. Pipes provide a nice dark damp shelter for slugs.

Leeks would be less of a problem since leeks aren't #1 on the slug hit parade.

I can't think of any use for them, but you know that as soon as you give them away, something will turn up and you'll wish you'd kept them  ;)

When you use them for leeks you should always have at least a third of the plant sticking out of the top. Either start with an 8 inch pipe and then replace it with a taller one as the plant grows, or just stick an extension on with duck tape.

I did this for the first time last year to see what happend. The leeks were sown directly in the ground and I picked out a dozen at transplanting size which were piped. The rest were transplanted in the traditional dibber way. I was amazed at how much faster the piped ones grew. Who says that the growth of leeks is not checked when they are transplanted?

Must remember stratts they are not good for pot leeks they are meant for blanch leeks or long leeks the tube just keeps the light out and keeps the stems nice and white. ::)

You could always cut them in half lengthways and use them for sowing peas, like people do with guttering?

or you could stick them in the ground next to courgettes and squashes etc and use them to direct water straight to the roots.
