Scale of what? Strength?  They'd be much like garlic chives but with a shorter season.  Much broader leaves (very like lily of the valley).

That may be a problem mj as there's no shade on my plot.  The shed casts a bit of shade by midday but perhaps I'll put some in the garden (although I hate the thought of eating stuff from my garden - too many nasty beasts about).

I bought some seeds in Germany (bear garlic they call it).

Oh sorry, for some reason, I read, beer garlic there, bear garlic is yet a third species, it's in vogue on the continent now. Very nutritious early spring greens, sells for a fortune.

As for growing it, the same as said. It grows naturally in woodlands, thickets.

Also can eat the bulbs, mind, use as garlic and store the same.

Thanks everyone for enlightening me.  Glad to know I have something to add "vogue" to my plot!  Agapanthus I could send you a few seeds but I've only got enough for 30 pflanzen it says on the packet.  Not sure if it would be worth splitting the pack.

Not a lot is it.  I thought in Germany you'd get more generous packs of seeds.
