white potato chits.
« on: February 15, 2012, 17:44 »
Hey there!

Bought my seed potatoes a few weeks ago and have had them stored since in a cardboard box in the bedroom. Had a squint in the box today as i intend setting them out to chit soon, and noticed the little blighters had started of their own accord!!! Should i snap these white chits off before i set them out to chit in my cool frost free room or should i just leave them on??
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

How long are the chits?

If not very short, I'd be minded to snap them off and put your spuds to chit now.  They've started growth so won't hold back.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes, I put mine to chit as soon as I buy them, from January onwards.  If you leave them in the dark the sprouts will be white and you definitely don't want that.

They're just on the long side, I'd pull them off. Mine usually go in with chits no longer than an inch.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Assuming some are less than 2", I'd remove all except the 3 or 4 shortest chits on each seed in the hope they green up in the light, and if they produce more new chits that's even better as the new ones will probably be stronger - this avoids the risk of being left with a seed that can't produce any new shoots, because as far as I know each "eye" can only produce one chit.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I seem to remember that they regrow from the base of the ones you've rubbed off :)

They might do (not really experimented but I was thinking of the practice of some growers of rubbing off all but a few chits before planting to produce fewer but larger potatoes.)

In the name of (not very) scientific research I have just pulled a couple of perfectly good chits off one of my seed spuds and circled with a felt-tip pen to see if they re-grow!

A potato is a seed so it will just keep putting out chits until it has been planted.. So as everyone has said - rub them off and start again in a light but not in the sun position. They are best when a dark purpleis colour and not the long spindly white..
