Liquid manure... should I make it..
« on: February 11, 2012, 18:58 »
Me with another question..

I have managed to be given another 1000 LT IBC plastic tank. I have recently fitted one to my shed and greenhouse guttering system to be used as a large water-butt.. Now my quandary is whether to get this ons and make liquid feed with horse poo..  I could use onion bags and hang them in the tank for a while then drain the water directly into  the lines of veg.

Is this sort of feeding worth while and will it have to be diluted.. (depends on strength I realise) but as I can get loads of horse poo It would work well as an extra feed program.. am I going nuts or would it be good.

I also have a normal water-butt which I was going to make comfrey and nettle tea feed..

Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

I have never done either myself but I know that Terry Walton does this with sheep manure so I presume horse would work as well.

I really wouldn't fancy making that size of container full of the 'stinky stuff'  :nowink:

A bucketful now and again, but all of that - fermenting away before you can use it doesn't bear thinking about, sorry!  :tongue2:

I made comfrey tea last year in one of the big containers that my growmore came in. I think it was the 10Kg size. I got a 50p plassy ladle from t***o and put one scoop into my watering can and topped it up with water. The improvement in my tomatoes was amazing. I won't be buying tomatorite anymore.
I believe that comfrey and nettle provide different nutrients so it may be better to keep them separate.

I don't see why not, but as it's free I would just tip it on my compost heap and make fresh just to be sure.

There's a point, I'll be planting in the poly' shortly, so I think I'll water (re-moisen, sp?) in there before I plant up.

Don't forget, you can't use it direct as it will burn the plants. It needs to be diluted probably at least 20:1 that means you would end up with 20,000Ltrs.

I was wondering about that as well. I make about 50/60 litres of liquid feed a year and when it's diluted that's as much as I need for my garden and greenhouse

I have the space no problem... but it looks like it might just be toooooooo big... I'll use a wheelie bin in stead for the liquid manure and the water-butt for the comfrey as they have different NPK properties.. !!

I have used comfrey tea on my tomatoes but found it made them taste bitter. I was dissapointed as I planted lots of comfrey for that purpose
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.
