Seed potato size
« on: February 08, 2012, 22:40 »
I've received my seed potatoes by post. I'm a little surprised by the size of my Charlotte seed potatoes. 2.5kg and only 23 tubas, they're decent sized potatoes that I would cut down if I were boiling them. I was hoping to succession plant them for a long period. Has anyone else experienced large seedpotatoes? I remember from years back seeing potatoes being cut up so they go further and then planted. Does anyone do this?
Cheers,
Huw

In theory you can cut a seed potato into several pieces, each of which will then grow into a new plant as long as each piece has one "eye", or preferably sprouting chit on it; the problem is that the more cut surfaces you create the greater the chance that infection and rot will set in so you get nothing.

People used to dust the cut end/s with flowers of sulphur to reduce the chances of fungal infection, but it's a bit hard to come by these days - cutting suitably large seeds in half (each half must have at least one chit on) and then leaving the 2 cut ends to "heal" for a week or so before planting is probably the safest bet if you really need to do it.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

If anyone does want flowers of sulphur it is available from swiftbuys. I use them via ebay  :)
