Cultivating grapevine plants from cuttings ?
« on: February 07, 2012, 16:15 »
Hi
Anyone got experiences here ?
I tried out a little experiment last December. I took one of my cuttings and popped it into a jar of water rather sceptically...by early January a fresh bud was showing..and this week(early February) we've actually got a leaf unfolding itself. Am I into Hydroponics ?

Not really. Grapes are so darned hardy that their life goal is to reproduce. I simply snapped off a few wayward stems, stuck them in the ground and they all took. I had to give them away as I simply don't have room for them all. Only thing you must remember is to plant them with the outside end up.

Anyone into this ?
Last December I thought I would supplement my micro-vineyard by cultivating some new cuttings. I put some in pots with composts etc and a few in a glass jar of water.

Uptil now (obviously) the potbound cuttings are still in a deep sleep. but the cuttings in the jar of water ( on the windowsill) first developing a bud in early January and now in early February its igot into the "bud break" stage - incredible!
Am I into Hydroponics ?

Hi Vineyard Red,
Yep, its very easy to cultivate new vines as Trillium said. l take four bud cuttings thats one stick with four buds on it, the last bud EG the one you will put in the ground needs to be cut right underneath the bud, push the cutting into your pot (l use 2L pet bottles  so to leave room for plenty of root growth) covering two buds and leaving two buds above the surface.
What Var are you cultivating?
Where in the uk are you? ( if you put you area/location on your profile it helps)

As a bit of info, I have seen a couple of bits of cutting pushed into the ground and within 12 months produce 30 foot of growth and kilos of grapes, but this was in southern Portugal, they are weeds bay another name.

HHMMM, dont see that happening here, on average take about 4-5 years to get an amount of grapes worth doing anything with.
