Thanks for all the comments. Thankfully they're back to going to bed in the coop - just a one-night deviation!

I've tried paper in the crevices and on the underside and ends of the perches - all clean. But I might slurry treat anyway. I clean the poop out every day or two and a full change of base newspaper every 3 or 4 days. How long does it take for ammonia buildup in a well ventilated coop? I can't smell anything strong - are chooks noses more sensitive than humans'?

My remaining 3 seem active enough, though not eating as much as before - do they go off their food in cold weather? (maybe the one who died was the greedy one ) Laying well - an egg each a day.

Can't wait for this weather to improve so I can go out in the garden with them and let them roam.
