Very Poorly Hen - Mystery !
« on: February 04, 2012, 13:56 »
Hello,

One of my hens has been poorly since wednesday.

I found her Wednesday morning as I went to let the others out the coop to find that she hadn't gone back in that night. I picked her up and put her in the coop with water and food and she was still there at night.

We now have her in the house and I am feeding her water and liquid cat food by syringe.

She looks in great condition, has no breathing difficulties, has a red comb. She is just sitting there with her eyes shut and doesn't move. When her eyes open she moves her head from side to side ! She is about 3 years old, hasn't laid for the last 3 months. Has has always been healthy.

Other hens are all fine.

I have put a couple of photo's of her in my gallery - not sure whether you can gain access ?

Any ideas would be really appreciated  - Thank you

Probably before Christmas , use Verm-X pellets in their food. Previous to that used flubenvet. All other hens seem healthy.

Her eyes seem sunken too. Thank you for your help  :)

There's no evidence that Verm-x works.  When do you think you might have last used the Flubenvet, or was that Christmas too?  What breed of chicken is she and have you checked her all over for lice etc.?

Have had a look and there are some tiny cream lice ? I usually do the houses with dusting powder and the hens but not recently. Whats the best thing to do for her. I have some spray and powder. She seems very weak. Thank you

I use Frontline for lice and it might be worth checking that there's nothing in the coop too although I don't think red mite would be active with this cold weather.  The reason I asked about the breed was in case it's simply old age.  I hope she gets better soon.  Keep us posted.

Sorry forgot breed ! She's a Warren, probably coming up to 4 years.

Just sprayed her with some colombine spray -  she doesn't have that many lice.

Really appreciate you help  :)

I'm sure one of the experts will be along soon to help but I think that's a good age for a hybrid (I think a Warren is a hybrid but I'm more than happy to be corrected if I'm wrong), so it could just be old age.

Hello there,
I agree with Kegs here, she is a good age for a Warren.  I also think Warrens are hybrids.  From what I have read on this site Frontline (kitten strength) is what is recommended for lice and other external visitors and Flubenvet is what is recommended for worms and other internal visitors.  It may be worth using both.  Even in this cold weather a quick red mite check may also be useful.  Just slide some white paper in the cracks and crevices, not forgetting to check the perch ends, and if you see any red the @@@@ers are there.
Good luck and keep us posted  :)

Sorry to hear about your chook. Mine's poorly too, and not eating. Can you perhaps tell me how you prepare your liquid catfood, and how liquid?
How easy is it to administer by syringe?
Thanks - and hope she gets better soon. BG

But please be aware that frontline is not licensed for chooks and you should not sell the eggs.

Could she be egg bound as Speckles who is about 5/6 has just started laying again. People suggest putting finger inside to check.

Completely understand not to sell eggs, but are they ok to use at home? If not, how long to wait after treatment?

Frontline isn't absorbed into the bloodstream - it lines the feather shafts and kills the mites/lice when they brush against it. It's perfectly alright to eat the eggs, but you shouldn't sell them for at least 7 days after treatment (so my vet says).
