what can I use instead of spirit vinegar?
« on: February 02, 2012, 13:13 »
Hi,
I love pickles especially piccalilli but am allergic to spirit vinegar - in fact any alcohol at all - can anyone suggest what I can use to make piccalilli - a recipe would be great!
Thanks

This forum seems to suggest you can use non-brewed condiment - like you see in chippies - in the place of vinegar:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for the replies.....
Can I use distilled white vinegar - not sure what the difference is?
I can have a bit of malt vinegar on my chips and seem to be ok with that - just not white wine / spirit vinegar.............

Would you be able to use rice wine vinegar as used in Chinese cookery. Not sure if the acid levels would be enough to make piccallili tho'. You would need to check the acid level.
