Sudocrem for scaly leg
« on: October 16, 2007, 10:38 »
Has anyone tried using Sudocrem (for babies' napy rash) to kill scaly leg mites? I read that Benzyl Benzoate would work and then realised that was the active ingredient in my little boy's nappy cream! I slathered it on the hens legs last night so we'll see...

i bought a new chook a few weeks back, with really bad scaly leg it had even been bleedingg. i put some pictures on here and got some great advice - vaseline.

crunchie's legs were slathered everyday and she's now more or less healed with nice clean looking legs. and its cheaper than sudocrem and smothers the mites to death

all of them ,,,, better to have it on before tehy attack  the scales as after cos it can drive the birds to pull the scales off themselves and make them even more poorly

Thanks for the advice - one of my hens has been bleeding too so I guess it is a pretty bad case - out of interest, how long does this take to build up? I have had the hens for about 3 months, would they have brought it with them?
Will carry on with the sudocrem as we have an ample supply with two little 'uns in our house - we now have one pot marked 'kids' and one marked 'chickens'!

it takes a month or so for the scales to really lift as the hens start to [eck at the mites under them making the situation worse but can take as little as 2 weeks ,so you could have had it come in after the birds came to you .it just happens , i have shot crows that have had it    :)
