Apple Cucumber

I've been given some Apple Cucumber seeds - they sound fantastic and by all accounts are delicious.  Anyone tried growing them before and any advice?

I Googled, as I've never heard of them and found this
Quote
victoriana nurseryEach fruit is the size of a small apple, hence it commonly being known as 'Apple Cucumber' - but as its fruit is a pale yellow in colour when ready to eat its actually called 'Crystal Lemon'.

I've grown Crystal Lemon and it's nice to eat and easy to grow  :)

I've got some of those to try this year. Do they taste like normal cucumber or different?

if you let them get ripe/yellow they are very mild flavoured, I prefered them a bit before that stage  :)

They definitely have a cucumber flavour rather than apple or lemon. We grew them last year and found them prolific compared to the Marketmore (prolific itself), even with the appalling growing conditions we had last summer. :)

I'd agree. They are very good, prolific and hardy. More of a bush for a cuke, so you do not need too much climbing frame. 2-3 feet shoots. Hairy fruit, but easily rubs in the wash.

I was going to stick a couple outside in a grow bag next to the chain link fence, so they can climb that if they want to. How thick/coarse is the skin, do you need to remove it? That for me is the main downside of a lot of outdoor cukes.

Not essential to remove the skin, but we did find it on the bitter side in some fruits and did so with these.

If you do not like the skin, then probably yes. I never felt the need to remove any cuke skin.

I grew crystal lemon a couple of years ago and would agree with the previous comments. Mine did tend to sprawl a bit but they are certainly prolific.
